On September 18th and 25th, the Metropolitan Alliance for Common Good hosted two leadership trainings regarding how to efficiently community organize. This report will discuss the main takeaways and concepts which were covered from each of the training sessions. If further explanation is needed regarding these concepts please feel free to contact JD Duran at jdduran@stcharlespdx.org
During the first training day, the main takeaways were the importance of having a balanced civil sector within democracy, why having a mediating institution is most efficient for community organizing, and what makes a great leader. From the training, a civil sector was defined as a place where the community could gather. Examples I have a civil sector are churches, unions, town halls, etc. Within democracy there are two other sections: market and government in addition to the civil sector. Similar to 1800s the three sections should be balanced with one another in order to create efficient community organizing and democracy. Another takeaway from this training was why having a mediating institution is key when providing support/action to social justice issues. A |
mediating institution operates proactively by providing leadership development in order to cultivate its future community culture. Furthermore, a mediating institution also stands “with” people rather than “for” them. The last main takeaway from this training session is that although there are certain traits and characteristics which make-up a great leader, everyone has the potential to become one especially through thorough practice with skills over time.
On the second day of these training sessions, the main takeaway was why and how having a solid core team is important. Having a solid core team is vital because not only do responsibilities become distributed, but all bases can become effectively covered when it comes to working with a specific social justice issue at that time. These leadership trainings are recommended for anyone who potentially would like to further develop their own leadership skills, or for simply anyone who would like to help their community in an efficient manner.
